Zombie Well Risk Map

Texas pumps billions of barrels of oilfield waste back underground every year. That pressure has to go somewhere. Often it goes up the nearest old well.

A zombie well is a plugged well that has failed and come lurching back to life. Its old seal gave way under that pressure, and a hole everyone thought was dead is a live path to the surface again. The people living on top rarely know it's there.

Older plugs, more injectors, higher risk.

Each dot is a well: green is quiet, red is at risk. Pink dots are injectors — the wells doing the pressurizing. Click any well for its score and its threats. ☰ filters. ★ ranks the highest-risk wells.
